If you smell gas inside, get everyone outside immediately. Avoid operating electrical switches, appliances or phones indoors. If safe to do so, turn off the gas supply at the outdoor meter. From a safe location, call 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). If there is a fire or an immediate threat to life or property, call 000. Do not re-enter until the property has been assessed as safe.

Avoid light switches, appliances and anything that could create a spark, and don't use a phone inside. Once you're outside and it's safe, call your gas emergency line and a licensed gas fitter.

Common gas heater problems
