What does a gas leak smell like?
Natural gas is odourless, so a distinctive rotten-egg or sulfur smell is added so leaks can be detected. You may also hear a hissing sound near a gas line or appliance, or notice dead vegetation near an underground line.
If you smell gas, treat it as an emergency. Do not use electrical switches or naked flames, ventilate the area, turn off the gas at the meter if safe, and call a licensed gas fitter immediately.
If you smell gas inside, get everyone outside immediately. Avoid operating electrical switches, appliances or phones indoors. If safe to do so, turn off the gas supply at the outdoor meter. From a safe location, call 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). If there is a fire or an immediate threat to life or property, call 000. Do not re-enter until the property has been assessed as safe.
