What should I do if I smell gas?
Treat it as an emergency. Get everyone out of the building straight away — don't wait to see whether the smell gets stronger. Do not operate light switches, appliances or anything that could create a spark, and don't use a phone inside the building.
Once you're outside and it's safe to reach, turn off the gas at the meter, then call your gas emergency line and a licensed gas fitter from a safe distance. If there is a fire or immediate danger, call 000. Never try to find or repair a gas leak yourself.
If you smell gas inside, get everyone outside immediately. Avoid operating electrical switches, appliances or phones indoors. If safe to do so, turn off the gas supply at the outdoor meter. From a safe location, call 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). If there is a fire or an immediate threat to life or property, call 000. Do not re-enter until the property has been assessed as safe.
