Is my gas heater safe?
Faulty gas heaters can leak carbon monoxide — a colourless, odourless gas that is dangerous. Warning signs include a yellow or lazy flame, soot marks, excess condensation, and headaches or nausea when the heater is running.
Have gas heaters serviced and carbon monoxide tested every two years by a licensed gas fitter. We provide safety inspections and compliance certificates.
If you smell gas inside, get everyone outside immediately. Avoid operating electrical switches, appliances or phones indoors. If safe to do so, turn off the gas supply at the outdoor meter. From a safe location, call 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). If there is a fire or an immediate threat to life or property, call 000. Do not re-enter until the property has been assessed as safe.
