Do Your Evaporative Cooling Pads Need Cleaning or Replacing?

Should evaporative cooling pads be cleaned or replaced? Learn what to check and see Adelaide price guides for pad replacement and servicing.
Quick answer
Worn cooling pads may need replacing, but poor cooling alone does not prove the pads are the problem. Their condition, water distribution and airflow need checking together. Sometimes cleaning is enough; sometimes the pad material has reached the end of its useful life.
A service and a replacement pad set are different jobs.
What are the pads doing?
The pads are the material the cooler wets before drawing air through it. If they are damaged or water is not spreading properly, cooling can suffer.
Different coolers use different pad materials and sizes. A replacement should match the system, rather than simply fit inside its frame.
When could cleaning be enough?
Ask the technician whether the pad material is still sound and whether cleaning can remove the build-up without damaging it. Cleaning cannot restore material that is breaking apart.
The water-distribution system also needs attention. New pads will not solve a problem if water is failing to reach them evenly.
When should replacement be considered?
Ask to see the condition of the pads and understand why replacement is recommended. Useful questions include:
- Are they damaged, distorted or deteriorating?
- Is the build-up removable, or has it affected the material?
- Are all the pads the correct type and size?
- Has the rest of the cooler been checked?
There is no single replacement age for every pad. Seeley’s guidance distinguishes between pad types and notes that water quality and conditions affect their life. Follow the guidance for your model.
What does pad replacement cost?
Our guide for a complete pad set, supplied and fitted, is $450–$750+. The model, required pads and access affect the quote. We confirm your price after a site visit.
If you are arranging routine maintenance instead, our evaporative service guides start at $199+ for single-storey homes and $299+ for double-storey homes. Extra parts or repairs are quoted separately.
What should you send when booking?
Send the model from your paperwork or controller if available, describe the cooling problem, and tell us whether the home is single or double storey. You do not need to climb onto the roof for a photo. Leave pad removal and roof access to the technician.
If there is water entering the house or near electrical equipment, stop using the cooler if safe and call for help.
